Spa & Wellness Dictionary
Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of aromatic essential oils derived from flowers, leaves, roots, woods and fruits
to promote physical and psychological well-being.
These oils are used in combination with massage, inhalation therapy and baths. In general, oils that
evaporate slower have a calming effect, while quickly-evaporating oils are considered emotionally uplifting.
The word 'Aromatherapy' was coined by Henri Maurice Gattefosse in France in 1928.
Ayurveda means the knowledge of life. The word consists of two Sanskrit words "ayur" meaning life and
"Veda" meaning knowledge. Ayurveda is India's traditional system of medicine and it's been practised for more than 5000 years. It states that every disease
begins with imbalance in the person's consiousness.
Ayurveda combines meditation, massage, nutrition and essential oils to bring the body to its perfect balance.
Balneotherapy involves treatments based on water (thermal hot springs, mineral water etc.)
Essential Oils are used in arometherapy. A few to mention - Rose, Lemon, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Lavender, Ylang Ylang,
Cedarwood, Mandarin, Rosemary, Basil, Peppermint etc.
Reiki, meaning Universal Energy, consists of a therapist placing his or her hands on various hand positions on the body. There is no
manipulation of any sort.
Sauna. Dry heat used to open the pores and eleminate impurities through sweating.
Spa. The most popular definition of Spa originates from the Latin term "Sanum Per Aqua" or "Health through water".
There is also a Belgian town Spa.
Thalassotherapy comes from the Greek word for sea. It is a term for a variety of spa treatments that use sea water, seaweed,
algae and/or mud to rejuvenate and revitalise the body.
